I will do my best to answer all your comments and concerns, I ask that all comments for or against me or any topic be civil and polite. There is no way we are going to agree on every topic, so please be respectful of other peoples’ opinions.
This leads me into my choice of parties. Since I’ve retired, I read the Wall Street Journal op-eds and opinions pretty much every day. Based on what has happen over the last several presidencies I am not comfortable aligning myself with either party. One of the problems of joining a major party is many of your positions are decided for you. I prefer to think and decide for myself. The Forward Party does not dictate to me what to think but I have signed a pledge not to put down my opposition or engage in mudslinging. I agreed I would represent the people, which I intend to do. I consider myself to be a political free agent.
Now to Georgetown - I am against a tourism-based economy. Georgetown should have a industrial based economy mixed with tourism. My first priority is jobs. We need to bring in new industry to replace all the jobs that have been lost at the sea port, steel mill and paper mill. I would estimate ¾ of the residents of the City of Georgetown belong to working class families that have lived here for many years. Without new industry to provide careers to support these families, they will be uprooted and forced to relocate. I will explain in future articles my plan on how to make this happen.
The Big Three- The Sea Port, The Steel Mill, and the Paper Mill. There are talks going on right now on how to redevelop these properties in the best way for Georgetown. There are rumors about a Biomass company setting up shop at the Paper Mill. I am in favor of this. However, there are Biomass companies that burn everything and pollute the air and then there are environmentally friendly biomass companies that capture all the pollutants. The right company would provide long term employment, burn locally harvested wood, keep are air and water clean and provide affordable electricity. Furthermore, I would like to see the paper mill and sea port sites annexed into the city and that the new businesses pay property taxes and utility bills to the city to lessen the burden on the individual home owners.
Go home? I am home. My wife and I have called Georgetown our home for 16 years. I am not trying to change Georgetown, I am trying to preserve its character, beauty and charm and prevent it from being exploited. Please visit, https://www.keepgeorgetowngtown.com/
Try to remember, in the big scheme of things, we are all Americans.
Going forward, I intend to write a paper every two weeks, in the middle and the end of the month. In those papers I will address specific issues and define my policies on the pressing issues and offer solutions. I do not know it all, no one does. Please feel free to make suggestions and let me know how you see the city moving forward.
Final thought- For anyone that thinks I just emerged out of nowhere, let me tell you, I’ve already been fighting for the people of Georgetown. I have been a leader in the fight to have a transparent process in the development of the City of Georgetown Comprehensive Plan. The plan does not represent the wishes of the People of Georgetown but opens the flood gates for tourism and developers. I plan to speak before City Council to voice my concerns. Please attend the meeting so you can have a clear knowledge of what is transpiring. If you can’ t attend you can watch in on Facebook at the city’s web site. The meeting is this Thursday April 17th at 5:30. Please give me the benefit of the doubt, listen to what I have to say. I think you will be surprised.
