The Road to Economic Vitality in Georgetown

The City of Georgetown has suffered tremendous job loss over the last 2-5 years. Little has been done to replace these jobs leading to economic hardship on the working-class citizens of Georgetown.

The following pages outline my vision for bringing jobs back to Georgetown. I have been assisted by multiple experts in multiple fields to form this vision. My hope is the people of Georgetown will soon benefit from our efforts.

In order to arrive at the best possible plan, first we have to assess what we have;

  • A large, skilled, available work force

  • 12 million acres of timber land

  • Loggers to harvest the timber

  • Truckers to deliver the timber to the plant

  • Water access

  • Access to rail for inland transportation

The next point of focus is where to build a plant and what product to produce using the available resources.

There is currently a =/- 1000-acre site located in Georgetown County, owned by the county and designated for industrial use. Much of the due diligence has been completed for this site, clearing the way for quick permitting and construction.

The best product to produce at this site, using available resources is a plant that produces Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). (The following pages explain what it is and its many uses.)

A quick summary of Cross Laminated Timber attributes are;

  • Stronger the steel

  • Lighter than steel

  • Cheaper than steel

  • Proven technology already in use, world wide

  • As South Carolina grows, we can build it using our own products

The economic prospects for CLT are through the roof. Currently, there are high tariffs on steel creating great uncertainty for the people who rely on it, especially builders. Even the Nippon Steel- US Steel merger is fraught with peril as the current administration has required as part of the agreement that the Federal Government be given a “Golden Share”. This will allow the government to impose its will on the steel produces and will change each time we have a new administration.

In summary, if we can quickly find a company to come to Georgetown and produce Cross Laminated Timber products, Georgetown can once again enjoy the economic success like it has in the past.
